The body of a second year B Tech student of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, among the top technical institutes in Odisha, was recovered from a pond located inside its campus here on Tuesday. The student reportedly had gone missing from his hostel room since Monday evening.
Sources in NIT said Sidharth Sekhar Bartia, a second year student of B.Tech in Industrial Design, a native of Krushna Chandra Street, Sorada, Ganjam was staying in room no. E/102 of Vikram Sarabhai hostel of the
campus. On Monday evening at about 7 PM he had left his hostel room and had not returned.
Sources said Sidharth had left his cell phone behind while going out of his room. His room-mate was under impression that he would be returning soon but he did not.
On Tuesday morning, the workers at a construction site inside NIT campus noticed a body floating in the pond inside NIT campus area and informed the authorities. The body was recovered from pond and the authorities informed Sector-3 police station. After his batch mates identified the body of Sidharth, it was sent to the morgue in Ispat General Hospital (IGH).
The family members of deceased Sidharth Sekhar Bartia have been informed and they are reaching here tomorrow morning. After their arrival, post-mortem will be conducted and the body will be handed over to them, police sources said.
Sector-3 police have registered a case of unnatural death and have started investigating the case.
“We have registered an unnatural death case and our investigation is on,” said SK Sahoo, Sub Inspector, Sector-3 police station.
