Bhubaneswar, Sep 13:
Accusing the Odisha government of being a mute spectator to the situation, the state unit BJP today sought for immediate measures to tackle the drought situation looming large in nine districts due to deficient rainfall leading to crop loss this kharif season.
The BJP state unit president K V Singhdeo levelled the allegation at a press conference here today on his return after conducting a survey of nine districts in the state staring at drought due to insufficient rain this monsoon.
The senior BJP leader urged the government to send its officials for an on spot survey of the situation and take urgent steps.
He said a team of the BJP has prepared a report after conducting a survey of the possible drought in the state adding that the party will soon submit a memorandum to the Governor SC Jamir on this.
“No one from the government has yet visited the affected farmers. After Nuakhai, people will migrate to other places as labourers. There is no effort on the part of the government to keep the farmers back and not move to other parts of the state. The government is yet to tell the farming community about Rabi crops neither do they have any information on it. The administration too is not doing anything in this regard. The government should conduct a review of the drought situation and send its officers to the field to do an assessment of the situation and file their reports with the government. The government on receiving the reports should take appropriate steps on it. We have also decided to meet the Governor and apprise him of the situation by meeting him,” said K V Singhdeo at the press meet.
The BJD on the other hand has termed the allegations of government remaining silent on the issue as ‘baseless’ and claimed the government was doing everything to counter drought.
“It is baseless to allege that the government was standing a mute spectator on the possible drought. The government is taking all possible means and measures to contain the ill effects of drought. In order to see to it there are no lapses on apart of the administration, the government has appointed senior bureaucrats to oversee things in four districts. The KBK district chief is himself putting up there and working. The Opposition’s opinion on drought that the government should immediately visit the fields is correct and there is nothing wrong in it. The government is working in that direction. There is nothing in the Opposition pointing out wherever there is laxity at the implementation level,” said Sashibhushan Behera, spokesperson of the BJD in his reactions on the BJP state chief’s views on the possible drought situation in the state.
