BJP leader threatens ‘fast unto death’ on Kandhamal issue

OST Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Aug 17:

Demanding stringent action against the absconding assassins of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, BJP leader Ashok Sahu has decided to resort to fast-unto-death while observing total silence or ‘maun brat’, to register his protest from August 23.

“ The assassins are still at large after the brutal murder of Saraswati since August 23, 2008. On the other hand, the violence that erupted soon after his murder as a spontaneous outburst among his numerous disciples in Kandhamal district has been investigated and in many cases the trial is also over. In the name of investigation, numerous poor and innocent tribal people have been subjected to untold injustice as they failed to defend themselves”, said Sahu in a letter to chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

Stating that the people of Odisha were forced to endure the humiliation of being falsely painted as spreading communal hatred as well as prime minister’s statement describing Kandhamal violence as a national shame, the BJP leader criticized the chief minister ‘who never thought it appropriate to defend Odisha against these false accusations’.

He urged the chief minister to expedite the investigation into Swami ji’s murder and ensure trial in the nun rape case is resumed in the light of the observations of the High Court.

Sahu has warned that he would be forced to launch his ‘fast-unto-death protest’ if the chief minister fails to fulfill his demands within a week.(MM)
