Even as the Odisha government continues to receive kudos from different agencies, including World Bank and United Nations, for successfully evacuating close to a million before Cyclone Phailin, the state BJP today accused it of failing to provide relief materials to the cyclone and flood hit people.
“After having a chat with the affected people, it became clear that the state government is only making tall claims in handling the post-Phailin damages. The government has totally failed in carrying out its responsibility. There is a world of difference between the reality and the claims of the government in handling the flood situation in the state,” BJP state unit president KV Singhdeo said at a press conference here.
A BJP team led by Singhdeo had visited the flood affected areas of Mayurbhanj district to assess the actual situation of the affected people in the areas.
Stating that the government overestimated the cyclone and underestimated the flood, he said that when the state needs diligent work by the supply department to carry out distribution of relief materials, the Supply Secretary of the State is on foreign tour.
“While the government is claiming adequate supply of relief material to every panchayat of the affected areas, they are nowhere to be seen on the ground. In the absence of any clear instruction, the Sarpanches are unable to distribute the rice kept in the panchayat godowns. The false propaganda of the government has angered people and forced them to block roads, ministers and resort to agitation in different affected zones,” said the BJP president.
