Bhubaneswar, Sep 12:
The state BJP today expressed dismay over the manner in which the State Election Commission (SEC) gave a clean chit to Health minister Damodar Rout over charges of violating the model code of conduct currently in force for the urban elections to be held on September 19.
A delegation of BJP leaders, led by convener of the ULBs Cell Dilip Mohanty, met the State Election Commissioner and alleged that the Health minister had openly violated the code of conduct and even reprimanded the Sub-Collector and questioned his authority.
They said that in the questionnaire for the ‘Model Code of Conduct for the Guidance of Political Parties and Candidates’, question No 13 clearly states “A minister or any other political functionary is not allowed during the election period to use pilot car or a car with beacon lights of any colour or car affixed with sirens of any kind, whether private or official visit.” “In spite of this clearly laid down dictum, the Minster was allowed scot free,” said the delegation.
This clean chit will embolden the BJD and its functionaries to commit more violations as they would feel that they can get away with anything, said the delegation. The BJP leaders also urged the SEC to ensure that anti socials of the ruling party, who have ushered in a reign of terror in the state, are restrained for the smooth conduct of polls.
