Bhubaneswar, Nov 24:
Odisha Jan Morcha (OJM )has warned of a grave threat to democracy in the state, the way ruling BJD managed the ‘one sided victory’ in the ULB polls in western Odisha using blackmail and deceit to garner votes.
“The Finance minister and BJD vice-president Prasanna Acharya openly intimidating voters to lock up funds for development if they voted for the opposition is evidence enough of the immoral victory of the BJD and the grave threat it poses to democracy in the state”, said party’s secretary general, Jagneswar Babu in a press release here.
Mentioning that BJD had also won the first phase of ULB polls by utilizing government machinery and money power, Babu said Finance minister Acharya threatening voters at an election meeting in Bargarh has exposed the kind of unfair means adopted by the BJD to win polls.
The OJM secretary general said the manner in which the BJD initially boycotted the ULB polls in western Odisha in support of the demand for a High court bench in the region and then its sudden U-turn to take part in the elections was nothing but a clear case of betrayal of the genuine demands of the people of western Odisha.
Babu said the BJD asked all its ministers and leading MLAs to camp in twons where polls for the 20 ULBs were to take place because its leadership realized it is not going to be an easy task to win and its desperation was apparent in the way its leaders resorted to intimidation of the voters.
Warning all opposition parties of the impending threat to democracy in the state, Babu said the opposition parties need to come together to thwart BJD’s unscrupulous politics and prevent it from using the same tactics to win the 2014 general elections
