The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) councillor of Champua Notified Area Council (NAC) was on Friday elected uncontested as the chairperson of the newly formed urban local body (ULB) in Odisha’s Keonjhar district. On the other hand, BJD councillor also elected as Baliguda civic body chairperson.
The councillor—Gitarani Naik–from ward no 1 of the NAC was declared as the new chairperson of the civic body as none of the councillors filed their nomination papers.
Earlier yesterday, Gitarani filed her nomination papers in the presence of Keonjhar MP Sakuntala Laguri, former MP Jashobant Narayan Singh Laguri, Patna MLA Hrushikesh Naik, district BJD president Asish Chakraborty accompanied by eight councillors. Though four independent councillors were present, none of them filed papers to contest against her as a result of which election officer Sangram Keshari Swain declared her winner.
Similarly, BJD councillor from ward no 5 Mamata Behera was elected as chairperson of Baliguda NAC in Kandhamal district. Of the 13 councillors of the NAC, eight voted in support of Behera, five voted in support of Kausalya Naik.
While Mamata Behera filed nomination as BJD candidate which had gradded nine wards, Congress’ Kausalya Naik had filed her papers for the post which had won only three wards.
