BJD MLAs protest rail budget in Odisha Assembly, BYJD stages dharna

There were protests by the ruling Biju Janata Dal MLAs over the issue of neglect of Odisha in the Railway Budget in the Odisha Assembly during the zero hour today.Assembly 1 LARGE

After the issue was raised by the BJD MLA from Barchana Amar Prasad Satpathy, the BJD members stood up with placards denouncing the rail budget. They later staged a dharna in front of the Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the assembly premises and shouted slogans against the Union government alleging neglect of Odisha in the railway budget.

Inside the Assembly the Opposition chief whip and Congress MLA from Jeypore Taraprasad Bahinipati held both the State and Union governments responsible for the neglect of Odisha in the railway budget. He demanded that a resolution be adopted in the House on the issue and a delegation sent to meet both the Prime Minister and the Lok Sabha Speaker over the state’s demands.

Leader of the Opposition Narasingh Mishra demanded that the Chief Minister should call an all party meeting in the matter immediately and decide the future course of action.

Members of Biju Yuva Janata Dal are staging dharnas in front of all major railway stations in the state protesting against Odisha’s neglect in the Union rail budget. While BJD MLA  Priyadarshi Mishra and others were seen leading the protest dharna at Bhubaneswar railway station Pratap Jena and Prabhat Biswal were leading the protest at Cuttack railway station. BYJD and Biju Chhatra Janata will continue with its agitation for three days, today being the first day.

Senior BJP leader Biswa Bhusan Harichandan, however, dismissed BJD’s ‘so-called agitation’ as drama and said they should be happy that they have got nearly double the amount that Odisha got in the last budget. He also said, unlike in earlier years, the Centre has allocated almost half of what Odisha had demanded .
