Bhubaneswar, Oct 2:
Battered and badly bruised by a series scams and the ongoing CBI probe into the chit fund fraud, a beleaguered ruling Biju Janata Dal in Odisha today launched its annual state-level Jan Sampark Padyatra on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti to publicise the ‘achievements’ of its 14-year old government.
Kick-starting the mass contact drive at Raghunath Nagar in the city, the BJD supremo and chief minister Naveen Patnaik thanked the people of the state for making his party a strong regional party and voting it to power for four consecutive terms.
Addressing a public meeting he said his party would work ceaselessly to ensure a better life for the people in the state and overall progress of Odisha.
Every progarmme of the party focuses on Odisha’s development and self-esteem, he claimed, adding, that it’s the people-oriented policies of his government that has led masses to increasingly rally behind the BJD.
Among others, Tourism and Culture Minister Ashok Panda, Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patasani, local MLAs and BJD leaders attended the function.
The 10-day padyatra event, organised by the BJD every year from the Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 to Jayaprakash Narayan’s birth anniversary on October 11, has been extended till October 26 this year.
While the party sources said the duration of the padyatra was extended keeping in view the puja vacation this year, the massive deloyment of ministers, MLA and party organisers in the campaign for the bypoll in the KandhamalLok Sabha seat as well as the need to spend more days on the image-repair exercise appear to have been the more compelling reasons.
