In a bizarre incident, a man in Kolanara block of Odisha’s Rayagada district was thrown into river Nagabali on suspicion of being a sorcerer, police said.
Police and fire brigade teams are yet to trace the body of the man, identified as Bhima Rao Ataka of Veja village under Kolanara block, when reports last came in.
The victim’s son Chadra RaoAtaka said his father was waylaid by some villagers on Monday morning while he was going to a nearby pond for a wash and severely beaten up after being tied to an electric pole on charges of practicing sorcery. The villagers then allegedly packed him into a sack and threw him into the swollen Nagabali river alive, he alleged.
The villagers were reportedly had an altercation with Ataka, who they charged with practicing black magic.
On being informed, the police, with the help of fire brigade teams, launched a search operation in the river to trace the body.
“The search is still on. Fire brigade personnel have been asked to trace the man who was thrown into the river. We suspect at least 30 to 40 people to be involved in the crime,” Rayagada SDPO Niranjan Behera said.
No one has been arrested so far and policemen have been deployed in the village to maintain peace, Behera said.
