Kendrapara, Apr 25:
In a shocking incident, a woman was admitted to the hospital in Odisha’s Kendrapara district in a critical condition after she tried to commit suicide when no action was taken against the accused who allegedly tried to rape her minor daughter on Monday.
The 17-year-old minor girl of Bagada village of Kendrapara on whom the rape attempt was made was working as a sweeper in a private school.
After school timings were rescheduled at the beginning of this month due to the onset of summer, she used to go to the school at about 5 am everyday to clean the classrooms before the school reopened at 6 am.
On Monday, while she was sweeping a classroom, a 28-year-old married youth of Bagada suddenly barged into the room. Finding her alone, he tried to rape her. However, the girl, after a prolonged scuffle with the youth, managed to escape from the classroom and ran away to her house. Seeing the girl with her torn dress, the family members draped her with a cloth.
The family members later accompanied the girl to the Sadar police station. However, they had to wait near the police station as the district SP was on an inspection tour.
In the meanwhile, 3-4 persons came to them and proposed to amicably solve the matter at the village meeting. They tried to reason with her that filing complaint with the police would be cumbersome and would malign the girl.
Later, the family members were taken to the village where it was decided to dispose of the matter with a payment of Rs 50, 000 by the family of the accused.
Though the family members of the victim agreed to the proposal, her mother did not agree. When she was forced to agree to the proposal by other family members, she consumed poison.
She was rushed to the district headquarters hospital where her condition was stated to be critical.
Meanwhile, the accused has managed to abscond from the village, reports said.
