Brahmapur, Dec 2:
Wildlife officials have arrested a bird poacher at Balipatapur. This is the first poaching case in Chilika lake this migratory season, said official sources.
According to official sources during the raids conducted around the lake on Sunday, wildlife officials seized a dead open-bill stork and some poaching equipment from one Nimai Mandal.
Around four lakh winged guests from far off places including Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, remote parts of Russia, central and South East Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas have arrived in Chilika so far, said the sources.
While a majority of them have congregated in the 15.69 sq.Km Nalabana bird sanctuary area, Chilika Wildlife Division has made arrangements to ensure safety of the migratory birds and to prevent poaching.
As many as 17 camps have been set up in and around the lake involving over 50 personnel. Besides, police and local activists have also been engaged for bird protection.
