Big success for Chhattisgarh police in anti-Maoist operation

While a joint combing operation team comprising the police and the BSF nabbed a dreaded Maoist, involved in the massacre of 76 CRPF jawans in Dantewada district in 2010, 18 Maoists have surrendered before the Bastar police in Chhattisgarh on Monday, reports said.

Though the security personnel have shared information about the arrest of the dreaded Maoist, identified as Hemant Mandibi from Dantewada district, they have not revealed the location from where he was arrested.

According to police, Hemant was involved in the killing of 136 Central forces in the last five years including 76 CRPF jawans in an ambush inside Tadmetala forest after a three-hour cross-fire in April, 2010.

Besides, he was also involved in the killing of Congress leaders and workers during a rally at Jerum Ghat in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.

In another incident, 18 Maoists surrendered before the Bastar police bordering Malkangiri district in the presence of IG, SRP Kaluri on Monday.

Of these 18 surrendered Maoists, over 30 cases of serious crimes including murder, abduction and extortion are pending against Itwari Mandibi (Barasur Area Committee member), Jayadev Mandibi (commander, Jana Militia) and Lakhama Beti (Ketakalyan Area Committee member) at various police stations in Chhattisgarh.

Briefing newsmen, the IG said that the Chhattisgarh police had announced a cash reward of lakhs of rupees on their heads.

Stating that these three arrested Maoists, during interrogation, have admitted to their involvement in the Jerum Ghat attack, he said the police would hand over the trio to the NIA (National Investigation Agency) team for further investigation.

Apart from these three Maoists, 11 belonging to Parcheli village under Katekalyan area and four from Kuchepala village under Bhansi area, surrendered before the police in presence of the villagers, reports said.
