Bhubaneswar, Apr 17:
Authorities of the Jharpada jail in the Odisha capital are trying to cover up the death of an under-trial prisoner in the jail by offering compensation yo the next of kin of the deceased quietly.
The under-trial man identified as Tulu Sahu alias Robert was in the jail for dacoity and had been sick for over a month. The jail authorities had denied him proper treatment leading to his death on April 9, family members alleged.
In an attempt to cover up the incident after the news was flagged by leading local daily ‘Sambad’, jail authorities had called up Bulu, the younger brother of Tulu, and asked him to come to the jail with BPL card and other papers. Accordingly, Bulu, along with his mother, Tulu’s widow and his two little daughters came to jail yesterday and papers were reportedly processed for compensation for the death of Tulu.
His family, however, is still in shock.
“We don’t know when we are going to receive any compensation. Bbut would my son come back, even if we get it? I know that there was a dacoity case against him. That does not mean he would be treated like this. This case needs to be investigated,” said Tulu’s mother, sobbing all the while speaking to OST.
It may be noted that the inmates of the jail went on a sit-in demanding better health services after the death of Tulu. Even though the authorities convinced most of them to pull out of the sit-in and promised them better healthcare, six of them are still on dharna.
The Jharpada jail authorities are notorious for providing poor health services and prisoner death is nothing new for them either.
