Dhenkanal, Aug 14
State Pollution Control Board (OPCB) authorities today sealed the 300 MW coal fired power plant of Bhuhsan Energy Ltd (BSL) located at Narendrapur in Dhenkanal district over pollution concerns
The power plant supplies power to Bhushan Steel Limited (BSL)’S three million-tonne steel plant located nearby which manufactures pig iron, billets, slabs and hot-rolled steel coil.
The district administration had launched an investigation after local residents complained about the company dumping fly ash outside the plant premises and discharging untreated effluent into the nearby Kisinda nullah (drain), said district administration officials. “We had also asked SPCB to carry out an investigation and take appropriate action,” said the officials.
The SPCB Monday issued a closure notice to the plant after it failed to take measures to address environmental concernes raised in the past. According to a senior SPCB official, the company had been served show-cause notices a number of times over the past two years.
Despite being given sufficient opportunity to control air and water pollution through scientific disposal or utilisation of ash, the Board observed persistent non-compliance on the part of the company, he said.
“The power plant shutdown will definitely affect production at the steel plant,” district administration officials said. A senior company official however, declined to comment.
