The capital city of Odisha added yet another feather to its cap after it bagged the second runners-up spot at the World Smart City Awards-2016 announced at Barcelona yesterday.


Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena Innovative Global South Award today informed newsmen here that the city has been adjudged second runners-up at the three-day event organized by Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC).

“We have been able to compete among world class cities where 250 projects from 45 countries participated in it. Bhubaneswar was among the top six cities. Nairobi bagged the top spot and the remaining cities were declared the runners-up. We have bagged the second runners-up position. With this, investors would evince interest to invest and tourist inflow would increase,” Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said.

The awards were selected under City Award, Project Award and Innovative Global South Award categories from an unprecedented number of entries this year. The winners were selected for their cutting edge technologies that resolve urban challenges and benefit cities and their citizens.

While Nairobi bagged the top award under Innovative Global South Award category, Bhubaneswar was adjudged second runners up. Southern Indian city Chennai was among the top six contenders.

Notably, World Smart City Awards were established in order to identify cities, projects and innovative ideas in line with nurturing sustainable urban development.
