Bhubaneswar, Aug 29:
Even as lawyers in western Odisha are on an indefinite strike demanding establishment of a permanent High Court bench in western Odisha, lawyers of Bhubaneswar Bar Association on Thursday resorted to a one day cease-work agitation demanding shifting of the High Court from Cuttack to Bhubaneswar.
The lawyers blocked the National Highway 203 near Bhubaneswar Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court by placing burning tyres on the road disrupting vehicular movement for some time.
The lawyers urged the State administration and the judicial system to take initiatives for the shifting of the High Court to the capital city.
“Our demand is legitimate. We have been demanding shifting of High Court from Cuttack to Bhubaneswar since 1990 and have also submitted a memorandum to the then President. We also are a party in the Justice CR Pal Commission, set up by the State Government to give reports on the demands of western Odisha lawyers on a permanent High Court bench. Since then, we have been appealing to the concerned administration on our demands but in vain,” said association president Santosh Choudhury.
The agitating lawyers warned that if the no positive steps are taken at the earliest, they will intensify their agitation.
