Bhubaneswar, Sept 2
After successfully commissioning a 100 kilowatt solar power project, the Biju Patnaik Airport here, which is awaiting Union Cabinet approval for international flight operation, has planned to set up a 5 mega watt (MW) solar power project to run its utility grid system.
The 100 kilowatt solar power plant installed at the airport is set up by Lanco Solar Energy. The airport is purchasing power from the company as part of its corporate social responsibility activities for green energy. The project was commissioned on August 28.
“A solar power plant of 5 MW will be installed at the airport to save electricity costs and utilise renewable energy sources. We are on the lookout for 25 acres of suitable land to set up the project in the premises of the airport,” said Sarad Kumar, director of Bhubaneswar Airport.
Kumar informed that while 3 MW will be required for the operation of the airport, 2 MW will be provided to the state government.
A senior officer of the airport involved with the project said pre-feasibility study will be carried out after land is identified. “Once the land is identified, we will inform the state government to provide required facilities,” said the official.
