Bhubaneswar, Oct 24:
A 60-year-old betel shop owner, Bhagaban Sahoo, was beaten to death by a group of unidentified miscreants at Bharatpur basti under Khandagiri police limits in the Odisha for nothing more important than a dispute over a bottle of water late on Thursday night.
The incident came to light today when Deepika Sahoo, the daughter-in-law of the deceased, lodged a complaint in this regard with the local police station.
According to police sources, the heavily drunk miscreants came to the betel shop owned by Bhagaban at around 11.30 pm in the night and asked his son Alok, who had by then closed the shop, for a bottle of packaged drinking water. Alok’s refusal to give them the water bottle led to an argument, which soon turned into violence.
Things got worse when Alok slapped one of the. The whole group then pounced on him with lathis and wooden planks. When Bhagaban and Gopal Krushna Nayak, the brother-in-law of Alok, sought to intervene, the miscreants attacked them as well. They fled the place after causing serious injuries to all three of them.
Relatives rushed the injured persons to the Capital hospital here for treatment. But Bhagaban succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital, while the critically injured Alok and Gopal have been admitted and are undergoing treatment.
The police today detained three persons in connection with the case. “Investigation is on.
