Bear dies at Odisha’s Nandankanan zoo

Bhubaneswar: An ailing bear species native to the Indian subcontinent died at Nandankanan Zoological Park on outskirts of Bhubaneswar today.

The bear called as ‘Banki’ died at the age of 30. The wild animal was suffering from old age related issues and was in quarantine in past three months. It was undergoing treatment  at veterinary department of the zoo.

The black bear was brought to Nandankanan zoo after it was rescued from a dhaba in Banki area on July 18, 2006.

With death of the animal, the number of bears slipped to 14 at Nandankanan.

Last month, two lions died at an early age inside Lion safari of Nandankanan.
