Bhubaneswar, Feb 18:
Barsa Swony Choudhury, the estranged daughter-in-law of former minister Raghunath Mohanty, accompanied by her parents, met State Commission for Women (SCW) chairperson Lopamudra Buxipatra on Tuesday and sought her intervention to ensure her security at her rented house in Bhubaneswar and refund of her gold ornaments given as dowry at the time of her marriage to Mohanty’s son.
Barsa, who came with her father Kishore Kumar Choudhury and other family members, alleged that her father-in-law, mother-in-law and husband have been threatening her through various channels and demanded security for her and her family.
Expressing disappointment at the delay by the State Human Rights Protection Cell (SHRPC) in filing the charge sheet against her in-laws and husband, who were arrested for allegedly torturing her for more dowry last year, Barsa requested the SCW chairperson to look seriously into the matter.
“Despite my repeated appeals, the concerned authorities are not taking any action in filing charge-sheet against them,” Barsa alleged.
“Nearly one year has passed since the case was registered against my in-laws and husband. Unfortunately, the SHRPC, which was assigned to carry out the investigation, has failed to submit the charge sheet,” said Barsa.
She said she had met SHRPC ADG BK Sharma on January 14 seeking immediate submission of charge sheet.
Barsa said, “I suspect that the SHRPC will not file the charge sheet before the completion of ensuing Assembly elections since my father-in-law is a ruling party MLA and a powerful politician.”
Urging Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik not to give a party ticket to her father-in-law Raghunath Mohanty, Barsa alleged that some people have told the CM that she was interested to contest the ensuing Assembly polls on a Congress ticket from Basta constituency. “Perhaps that is why the BJD Government is not showing any sympathy to me,” she surmised.
Notably, Barsa had accused her husband Rajashree Mohanty, father-in-law Raghunath Mohanty, mother-in-law Pritilata Mohanty, sister-in-law Rupashree Madhual and brother-in-law Suvendu Madhual of torturing her physically and mentally for additional dowry.
