Sundargarh: A 12-hour bandh observed by the Sundargarh Nagarika Committee opposing toll collection on Biju Expressway affected normal life in the district today.
While shops and business establishments remained closed, vehicular movement came to a grinding halt in Sundargarh town due to the bandh. The district lawyers’ association extended its support to the bandh call.
Collection of toll on Biju Expressway between Sambalpur and Rourkela is being opposed by the Sundargarh Nagarika Committee. The members of the committee alleged that people of Sundargarh paid toll for the last 17 years on the road which has now been expanded and renamed as Biju Expressway.
Besides, the committee has demanded exemption of toll for vehicles of Sambalpur.
On the other hand, Works Minister Prafulla Mallik said the toll is being collected as the expressway has been constructed under Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) mode.
