B Tech graduate among two laptop lifters held in Odisha capital

Commissionerate Police today arrested two youths, including a B Tech student, for their alleged role in robbing electronic gadgets from the hostel of an engineering college in the Odisha capital.

The police have seized 18 laptops from their possession worth more than Rs 6 lakhs.

The laptop lifters have been identified as Abhitesh Nayak alias Milu (22) of Kadhamala in Cuttack district presently staying at Rajarani Colony near Rabi Talkies under Badagada police limits and Manoj Kumar Khatua (27) of Pathuripada under Banki police limits in Cuttack.

Addressing newsmen here, twin city Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr RP Sharma said the two youths were arrested two days ago during raids at various places in the city by a team consisting of the special squad and Kharvela Nagar police.

Abhitesh, a B Tech graduate from a city based engineering college who is now preparing for the GATE examination, is the mastermind accused in lifting these electronic stuff from the hostel where he had stayed earlier. He used to steal these gadgets early in the morning when hostel inmates are generally out of their rooms for classes or in the evening hours when they visit markets or go for a stroll, the commissioner said.

Out of the laptops seized, 6 are of the  HP brand, 4 Dell, 2 Lenovo, 2 Samsung, one Sony, 2 Compaq and one IBM. The police recovered 14 of the laptops from Abhitesh and the rest from Manoj.

Both the accused were involved in several cases registered at Kharvela Nagar, Saheed Nagar, Khandagiri, Infocity and Airfield police stations, Sharma said.

“Investigation is on to verify the antecedents of the accused. A case number-280/14 has been registered at the Kharvela Nagar police station slapping charges under sections 457, 380 of IPC against the accused,” the CP said
