Sambalpur, Dec 8:
A splendid century by Natraj Behera (158) went in vain as the Odisha fell short of Delhi’s first innings score due to a fine bowling spell by seamer Parvinder Awana on the third day of the Ranji Trophy group A match at the VSS stadium here on Sunday.
Awana returned with an impressive figure of 5 for 97 as Odisha were all out for 379, 63 runs behind their first innings total of 442.
At stumps, Delhi were 49 for two with skipper Gautam Gambhir continuing his poor form was out for just five while Unmukt Chand was dismissed for 3.
However, Virender Sehwag remained unbeaten on 32 with seven fours in 31 deliveries, with his partner Mithun Manhas not out on 4.
Resuming their overnight score on 121 for three, Odisha opener Natraj Behera , carried on the good work and completed his fourth first-class century.
Natraj recorded 157-run stand with Abhilash Mallick (71) for the fifth wicket and looked good to surpass Delhi’s first innings total but both fell in quick succession to hand an all important lead to the visitors.
Natraj scored 23 boundaries in his 290-ball knock while Mallick took 105 deliveries for his 71 that included 10 fours and two sixes.
Besides Awana, left-arm spinner Varun Sood (3/67) was instrumental in removing the lower-order batsmen while Ashish Nehra and Sumit Narwal claimed one wicket each.
Delhi were 112 runs ahead with eight wickets in hand.
Suryakant Pradhan and Deepak Behera were the wicket takers for Odisha.
