Nayagarh, Mar 6:
An elderly woman-daughter duo in Odisha is undergoing treatment at hospital after being rescued in an unconscious state late yesterday night. They have allegedly been looted of their valuables by an autorickshaw driver after offering them spiked drink yesterday in Nayagarh district.
The victims identified as Apeli Pradhan (80) and Kumudini Rout (60) had hired an autorickshaw for Odagaon at Petapalli Square yesterday to attend a marriage function. The vehicle had four occupants including the passengers. After moving for some distance, the driver and his accomplice offered soft drinks to these senior citizens which were mixed with sedatives.
After much exhorting by the duo, the unsuspecting women accepted the hospitality and downed the spiked drinks without having slightest of the idea that they have fallen victims to the nefarious plans.
The cons executed their scheme and looted the women of their valuables including gold jewellery, cash and luggage.
On the other hand, their family members launched a search after they did not get any information of reaching the destination.
After frantic search, Kumuduni was traced to Ranpur near Krushnachandrapur and Apeli from the premises of Sunakhela hospital in a comatose state.
Apeli and her daughter were rushed to district headquarters hospital here where they are undergoing treatment. While Kumuduni has regained consciousness, Apeli is yet to come to senses, family sources said.
“We got a bit worried as we didn’t get any information about them. They had gone to attend a function at Odagaon where my sister’s marriage was to be finalized. A day after, the marriage date was finalized. Late in the night, we got information about them and rushed to their rescue. After preliminary treatment at Sunakhela hospital, they have been admitted to Nayagarh district headquarters hospital,” Kumuda Rout, son of Kumudini said.
Later, a case was registered with Odagoan police station following which the officials have begun investigation into the incident. The cops have launched a manhunt to nab the looters.
Interestingly, it is the first such case in the district, police said.
“Some criminals are now out on bail. We suspect their involvement in the case. We have intensified our efforts to nab them. Hopefully, they will be behind bars soon,” Nayagarh SP Manoranjan Mohanty said.
