Briefing newsmen here this afternoon, Puri SP Anup Kumar Sahoo said the five accused, have confessed that they had tried to kill the minister to avenge the murder of former councillor Talachhu Bhagaban Mohapatra alias Guna Singhari in 2012.
Replying to a question, the SP said investigation is on to nab the mastermind behind the attack.
“The five accused would be forwarded to the court today after which we would seek permission from the court to take the accused on remand for further interrogation”, he added.
Mohanty said the five accused—Amit Bikram Harichandan, Jagannath Panda, Manas Ranjan, Lokanath Mishra and Satyanarayan Panigrahi—were arrested by a team of Puri police from Puttaparthy in Andhra Pradesh on Friday.
Police later seized two mousers, 10 live cartridges and two vehicles from their possession.
Giving details of the crime, the SP said the five accused after committing the crime went first to Chandanpur and from there they left for Brahmapur via Hinjilikatu in a Bolero jeep.
After reaching Brahmapur, they boarded a train and went to Karnataka.
However, police got the lead after seizing two pistols, used in the attack, from the Bolero jeep when it returned to Chandanpur after dropping them at Berhampur railway station.
“During the investigation, police came to know of the whereabouts of the accused by tracking their mobile phones and arrested them with the help of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka police from near Satya Sai temple”, the SP said.
The accused were later taken to Konark police station on Friday for interrogation and brought to Puri today, he added.
Later in the evening, the police arrested Shradhamani Mohapatra, mother of Guna Singhari, and forwarded her to the court after interrogation.
