A day after a dalit lady Sarpanch in Odisha was allegedly abducted, threatened and manhandled by four persons including two ward members from her own panchayat, Commissionerate Police has started a manhunt to nab the two ward members still at large.
The Tamando police arrested two accused named Sameer Kumar Paitala (41) and Biranchi Kumar Nayak (38) from Marthapur village under Baranga police limits, who it said were involved in the attack along with the absconding ward members Biranchi Ojha and Bansidhar Behera.
The two arrested accused were forwarded to the local court here today.
The arrested accused Sameer and Biranchi were booked under section 294, 323, 341, 354, 363, 506 and 34 of IPC and under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Ullas Behera (38), sarpanch of Naraj panchayat under the Barang police station in Cuttack district, had filed a complaint with the Tamando police on Monday night alleging that she was abducted, threatened and manhandled by four persons, including two ward members of her panchayat, after taking her in a car to the Bhubaneswar residence of the Banki MLA Pravat Triptahy to settle a longstanding dispute with regard to her continuance as the sarpanch.
The dalit sarpanch was later rescued by a local person Prabhat Behera, who helped her reaches the police station.
Police said they have launched a manhunt to nab the other two culprits soon.
