Athamallick bus tragedy: Odisha court grants bail to bus owner

A local court in Odisha’s Angul district today granted bail to the owner of the ill-fated bus which caused the Athamallick mishap killing 19 passengers.


According to reports, Angul District and Sessions Judge court granted bail to Rushav Kumar Tripathy.

Rushav was arrested on September 23 and was behind bars since then. According to reports, the bus owner was arrested despite having all valid documents of the vehicle. In protest against his arrest, Angul bus owners’ association had observed a dawn-to-dusk bandh two days after his arrest.

This apart, representatives of All Odisha Private Bus Owners’ Association, on September 26, had met Transport Minister Ramesh Majhi and served him a deadline to withdraw cases against Tripathy by October 6 failing which they would launch an indefinite strike from October 7.

The association had again observed a 24-hour bandh on September 29 pressing for fulfilment of their demands.

It may be recalled that ‘Maharaja’ bus bearing registration number OR 06C 9370 skidded off around 50 ft below the Manitiri bridge in the district killing 19 people.
