Eminent Odia film personality, art director and actor Nikhil Baran Sengupta, popularly known as Nikhil Da, passed away in a private hospital here today.He was ailing for the last few weeks, sources said.
He was 71.
Nikhil Da is survived by his widow Bijoya Sengupta and two sons, Neel and Biman.
Considered one of the pioneers of the Odia film indutry, Nikhil da had the great distinction of working as art director for more than 100 films in three languages – Oriya, Bengali and Hindi.
He has worked with 35 directors including Aparna Sen, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Manmohan Desai, Amol Palekar, Prasant Nanda, Biplab Roy Choudhury, Nitai Palit, Govind Tej and Raju Mishra.
Sengupta was born on December 13, 1943 and had his school and college education in Cuttack. His interest in painting took him to Kolkata to study art in Government College of Art & Craft.
After graduating from the Kolkata art college in 1969 , he worked with a number of advertising firms, as a visualiser and as an illustrator for several magazines.
His brilliant and eventful career as an art director began with Odia film ‘Janani’. After that he had never had any occasion to look back.
Winner of three state awards for art direction – Hakim Babu, Janani and Hisab Nikas – Nikhil Da was also the art director for first Odia colour film Gapa Helebi Sata.
He was honoured by the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award committee in 2008 for his great contribution to Odia cinema .
