Cuttack: Suspected al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) operative Abdur Rehman today filed a discharge petition before the Cuttack District & Sessions Judge Court here.
The trial court while conducting a preliminary hearing on the petition, scheduled the next date of hearing on the matter for September 6.
Contending that charges against Rehman were under adjudication, the prosecution while opposing the discharge petition sought more time from the court to file their response.
However, the court directed the prosecution to file its response by August 28.
“Since actually framing of charges was to take place today, the opposite side filed its discharge petition. Preliminary hearing on the discharge petition was conducted. We sought time from the court to file our response to it. The court after conducting a hearing on our plea directed us to file our reply by August 28,” informed Public Prosecutor Tapan Kumar Mandal speaking to reporters outside the court.
Notably, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Crime Branch has already submitted a 574-page charge sheet against Rehman in the court.
It may be mentioned here that Rehman, a resident of Paschimkachha in Cuttack district, was arrested by the Delhi Police on December 16, 2015, on charges of radicalizing youths for terror activities. Later, he was booked under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Rehman, who ran a madrasa in Tangi area near Cuttack, had alleged links with a man involved in a failed car bomb attack at the Glasgow International Airport in 2007, Odisha police had alleged.
Further, the police had also said that he is a member of AQIS.
Rehman was brought to Cuttack from Tihar Jail in Delhi is currently lodged in the Circle Jail at Choudwar.
