Lanjigarh, Jul 12:
The lone earning member of a tribal family in Odisha’s Kalahandi district has lost his hand in an accident in a stone crusher unit in Kerala over a month ago.
Sada Majhi from Dandiguda village under Lanjigarh Block in Kalahandi district had gone to Kerala as a migrant labourer. Assi Majhi and Pramod Majhi from his village were also working with him at the Emanuel Granites at Tanipadam under Palakkad district in Kerala. The 16-year-old boy had left for Kerala for work about two months ago.
After working for nearly a fortnight, he met with an accident while feeding raw materials to the crusher. On May 13 evening, his right hand got accidentally stuck in the machine and was severed.
He was immediately rushed to Thrissur hospital in a critical condition. After undergoing treatment for almost a month, he was discharged from the hospital.
The owner of the crusher unit offered some financial assistance to him and allegedly snatched away the hospital discharge report before threatening him not to divulge anything to others. He was sent to his hometown with another person from the crusher.
The teen was the sole bread earner of the family. He used to support his father, grandmother, two minor sisters and a younger brother.
Now, the tribal family is waiting for the district administration’s to provide them some succour. They are a distraught lot after the accident of Sada.
“We haven’t received any help from the district administration despite many sufferings,” a family member expressed.
