Bolangir, Mar 22:
Odisha Government’s special packages have failed miserably as farmer suicide continues unabated in the state. The latest case of suicide came from drought hit Bolangir district today.
As per reports, a farmer – identified as Nandi Ghosh today hanged himself allegedly due to crop loss and loan burden. The family members of the deceased said that he was under stress because of his inability to pay back the loans.
Notably, a sharecropper from Akhupal village under Kankadahada block of Dhenkanal had died yesterday while undergoing treatment at a hospital following an attempt to commit suicide.
The 50 year old farmer – identified as Prafulla Singh had consumed poison on Sunday because of crop loss and loan burden.
Interestingly, Odisha Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy on March 16 told the Assembly that 174 farmers had committed suicide in the state since the 2015 Kharif season; however, the government insisted that no suicide was linked to crop loss.
