Another child dies of Japanese Encephalitis in Odisha; toll reaches 71

Another child died of Japanese Encephalitis in Odisha’s Malkangiri today taking the death toll in the vector-borne disease to 71 in the district.


The deceased was identified as Manoj Baraja (5) of Barajaguda village in the district. The child died while undergoing treatment at the District Headquarters hospital here.

Notably, three kids had succumbed to the disese yesterday at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Central team, which had visited the affected villages in the district to take stock of the situation, held discussions with officials of Health Department in Bhubaneswar today.

“We visited the affected areas and talked to people. The state government has taken every possible step to control Japanese Encephalitis. The district administration is doing a good job as well,” said Kalpana Baruah, National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme’s Joint Director and a member of the team.

“Decision regarding administration of vaccines would be taken after a meeting to be held in November-December,” she said.
