Brahmapur, Jun 9:
A man identified as Gourahari Swain from Patadhara village under Jagannath Prasad police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district died while in police custody today. While the exact cause of death is yet to be known, his family claims he died due to police torture. Several marks on the body of Swain lend strength to the family members’ contention.
Jagannath Prasad police had arrested Gourahari last evening from his home on charges of theft. He was taken to hospital this morning after his health deteriorated but breathed his las soon thereafter. The cops have informed that he was suffering from stomach pain at the time of arrest and this could have caused his death.
Swain’s family members, along with some villagers, today blocked the Jagannath Prasad main road for a couple of hours demanding suspension of the police station in-charge and compensation for the family.
Two platoons of armed police have been deployed but the situation remains volatile. Additional SP of Ganjam and Bhanjanagar SDPO later reached the spot and held discussion with the public.
“The autopsy has been done in the presence of a magistrate. We have done a complete videography. We can only be sure of the cause of death after we have the post-mortem report. We will also investigate the complaint of custodial torture and will certainly take action, if anyone is found guilty. An officer from outside will be given the charge to investigating the case,” said Prana Dhana Mohapatra, ASP of Ganjam.
