Bhubaneswar: Even as the Cyclone FANI destroyed the green cover of Nandankanan, the zoological park is likely to get new guests including anaconda and giraffe soon.

The Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) authorities are planning to bring six animals including two giraffes and two yellow anacondas from other states to attract the tourists.

The animals will be brought as part of animal exchange programme before beginning of tourist season commencing from Dussehra.

The NZP sources said that a pair of giraffes, yellow anacondas and grey wolves will be relocated to Nandankanan from Mysore Zoo, Chennai’s Arignar Anna Zoological Park, also known as the Vandalur Zoo, and Indore Zoo respectively.

According to reports, the zoo has only one giraffe namely ‘Khusi’ after death of its partner ‘Joy’, just five days after its arrival to Nandankanan from Alipore Zoo in February 2016.

The zoo authorities hoped that Khusi, the lone female giraffe in the animal habitat, will get her another partner soon to increase their numbers.

Meanwhile, only one male grey wolf is surviving in Nandankanan after death of a female wolf. The pair of grey wolves was brought from Mysore Zoo last year.

The authorities have also decided to add a pair of yellow anacondas – giant snakes – for the first time to the zoo. With proposed plan by the NZP, the animal lovers will find opportunity to see these animals at one place on outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
