Bhubaneswar, Jun 9:
The Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) has served show cause notices to 36 hotels of Bhubaneswar for not having waste treatment plants. It has also served closure notice on three seafood processing factories in Mancheswar for the same reason.
“While 15 of the large hotels have already received permission from the board, some have applied for it. We have served show cause notices under section-33 of Water Act to 36 hotels of Bhubaneswar that do not have waste treatment plants. We would serve closure notice to the hotels after inspection, if they don’t act within the timeframe given,” said Regional officer of Pollution Control Board Hadibandhu Panigrahy.
Earlier, OSPCB had no data on the number of hotels operating in the city. Recently, it started an inspection drive to check if they have waste treatment plants and served notices on those who did not. While some of the hotels applied for OSPCB approval after receiving the notices, many are yet to do it.
The board has served closure notice on the seafood factories of Mancheswar as it found their treatment plants to be below the capacity recommended by OSPCB. It had been receiving frequent complaints from the locals against the pollution caused by the factories.
Upon testing, OSPCB founds higher quantities of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) from the water samples of nearby areas of the factories. These contents reduce the oxygen contents from the water.
It may be noted that OSPCB had recently started a similar drive in Puri to rein in pollution as we reported here:http://odishasuntimes.com/129777/217-hotels-set-to-be-shut-down-in-odishas-holy-town-of-puri/
