One more African lion dies at Nandankanan

Bhubaneswar: Sad news for animal lovers as one more African lion died inside safari at Nandankanan Zoological Park here on outskirts of the city today.

Although, the exact reason of the 8-year-old male lion’s death is yet to be clear, the wild animal was believed to be suffering from some kind of infection that caused its death.

The Nandankanan authorities said that the lion, which was brought from Tel Aviv Zoo in Israel to Nandankanan, suddenly fell ill. The wild animal was undergoing treatment at the zoo.

The cause of death will be ascertained after postmortem report.

With death of the animal, the total number of lions slipped to 12 in lion safari of Nandankanan zoo.

This is the second casualty of wild animal reported in August.

Earlier, an African lion had died at the age of eight on August 10 while undergoing treatment at the veterinary hospital in the zoo.

Notably, four lions were brought to Nandankanan from Israel in the year 2015 with an aim to increase their population in lion safari.

Usually, the lifespan of lions is approximately 15 years. However, the death of two lions in a month has raised a big concern for the Nandankanan authorities.
