No admission in four Homoeopathic colleges in Odisha this year

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, July 14:

There would be no admission in four Homoeopathic Medical Colleges and Hospitals in Odisha in the current academic session, thanks to the gross apathy of the state government.

In a letter to the Health and Family Welfare department, the Central Council of Homoeopathy has made it clear that there would be no admission in four Homoeopathic Medical Colleges and Hospitals-Abhinna Chandra Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Bhubaneswar, Utkalamani Medical College and Hospital, Rourkela, Biju Patnaik Homoeopathic Medical College, Brahmapur and Odisha Medical College of Homoeopathic, Sambalpur—till the time the state government fulfills adequate infrastructure requirements of these institutes.

It may be mentioned that the Council, in a letter to the concerned department in 2011, had informed that there would be no further admission in these medical colleges if it fails to take up infrastructure development and make appointment of teachers and staff as required in the next two years.

The decision of the Council came after a team visited these medical colleges in January last year and found that there is no improvement in the infrastructure.

It may be mentioned that each of these medical colleges has a total of 25 seats while 100 Homoeopathic doctors pass every year from these institutes.

While the Council prescribes for a regular professor and reader for each department, these medical colleges have acute shortage of teachers.

Talking to Sambad requesting anonymity, a senior official of the Health department said though the Council had reminded the department of the miserable conditions of these medical colleges earlier, it had not asked to stop admission.

“The department has requested the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) for recruitment of teachers to fill up the vacant posts. Besides, efforts are on to take up admission in these medical colleges in this academic session”, he added.

  1. I welcome CCH decision for no admission to 4 Govt. Homoeopathic College. Odisha State Government has been sleeping over the proposal for the development of Homoeopathy all these years whereas the Indian Council of Medical Research shows Homoeopathy is only next to Allopathy as medical solution to human ailments.

A survey done by ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) covering 33,666 households spreading over 19 states on utilization of Indian system of medicines and Homeopathy in India showed a preference level for Homeopathy as a therapeutic choice stands next only to Allopathy. ASSOCHAM has put growth of Homeopathic industry at 25-30%. The market forecast by A.C. Nielson published by Express Healthcare of Indian Express puts its volume of business at 52000 crores by 2017.
