Bhubaneswar, Dec 17:
State election commissioner (SEC) Ajit Tripathy today let senior BJD leader and Finance minister Prasanna Acharya off with a warning while conceding he had indeed violated the model code of conduct during the campaign for ULB polls in western Odisha.
“The Commission has realized after examining reports from different sources including Bargarh district Collector that Acharya has violated the model code of conduct being in force during urban body polls in western Odisha. He has been cautioned not to do this in future,” said Tripathy to media persons here.
The SEC’s ruling in the matter comes a day after he met with Governor SC Jamir, who had summoned him following allegations by the Congress that the Commission is playing a partisan role while dealing with cases of poll code violations by BJD leaders.
The Congress leaders had demanded the immediate removal of the State Election Commissioner for allegedly favouring the ruling party and failing to take appropriate action against BJD ministers despite blatant and repeated violations of the model code of conduct.
It is to be noted that Acharya had, in a public meeting in Bargarh during the ULB poll campaign, threatened to stop flow of funds for development if people voted for Congress . The commission had also not taken any action against two other ministers Dr Damodar Rout and Rajanikant Singh for their alleged violation of the model code of conduct.
