Cuttack, Aug 28
Twin City commissioner RP Sharma on Wednesday said the principal of a city-based public school arrested on Tuesday on the charge of murdering a lady teacher of his school had confessed to his crime.
Paresh Mohapatra, the principal of St Xavier’s school near Barabati stadium here, was arrested yesterday in connection with the murder of Alakananda Mohapatra.
“During interrogation, the accused has admitted that he had strangled the deceased with her odhani (scarf) and later cremated her body,” Sharma told reporters here.
Commissionerate police on Wednesday raided the CDA house of Paresh Mohapatra to gather more evidence in the case.
Police began investigation into the case after the brother of the deceased lodged an FIR with the Markatnagar police about his sister Alakananda Mohapatra, who had gone missing since July 29. The murder is believed to have taken place shortly thereafter.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased, a native of Palasuni area of Bhubaneswar, got married in 2009 while she was a teacher in the St Xavier’s School in the capital city. She, however, left her in-laws’ house in 2010 after she found her husband suffering from schizophrenia.
Her misery continued as the school management terminated her service because her in-laws frequently visited the school and harassed her. Later, she worked as a part-time teacher in some schools in the city.
In the meantime, she came in contact with Paresh Mohapatra, who arranged a job for her in a public school in Balangir town on her request.
After working in Balangir for some days, Alakananda left the school and worked with Mohapatra in the compilation of an English grammar book. It was during this period that she developed a relationship with Mohapatra and started staying with him in a rented house at Sector-10 in January this year.
Acting on the complaint of Debpratap, her brother, police on Tuesday arrested Paresh and two of his friends. During interrogation, police came to know that the body of Alakananda was taken in an ambulance van to the funeral ground at Kaliaboda for cremation.
Police later collected the urn from the cremation ground and seized the ambulance van in which her body was taken to the cremation ground.
