Bhubaneswar, Sept 14:
Diptiranjan Patnaik, the absconding security guard who was arrested from Mancheswar area in the city late on Saturday, has confessed to brutally killing a city-based businessman’s wife Bachan Sudha Pattanayak at her residence in Sabarsahi here on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nitinjeet Singh said today.
“It was a pre-meditated crime with the intention of robbery at the residence of the deceased. The accused had chalked out the detailed plan earlier to execute the heinous crime,” the DCP said.
The interrogation of his girl friend Nandita of Bolagada in Khurda district, who was detained on Thursday, helped the police in nabbing the culprit, Singh said. Diptiranjan had called the lady after committing the crime and asked her for shelter at her residence, he added.
Diptiranjan was brought to the Pattanayaks’ residence today to recreate the crime scene for the police. The accused narrated in detail how he entered the woman’s kitchen and assaulted her, police said.
As per Diptiranjan’s confession, he came for the second shift at around 10 am as replacement for the man who failed to report for duty about half an hour after the security guard on the morning shift Kanhu Charan Nayak left on the fateful day.
The whole act of crime was executed by the accused between 12.30 pm and 1 pm. Diptiranjan first rang the calling bell of the residence and then entered the first floor on scaling the side wall after the bell was not answered.
At the time of attack, the deceased was in the kitchen, busy preparing some dishes. The accused first attacked her from back. When she resisted, a tussle broke out between the two. With the help of a household knife, the accused then repeatedly stabbed her, police said. The accused too received injuries on his left hand finger, the police added.
After killing Bachansudhha, Dipti took away currency notes, including some foreign currency, from Bachan Sudha’s vanity bag. He used some of the money while hiding from police. No diamond necklace has been recovered from the accused, police added.
After committing the crime, the accused shuttled between several places, including Nayapalli, Khurda, Nimapada, Nayagarh, Ranpur, Pipili and Niali, to hide from the police. He returned to Bhubaneswar on Friday evening after losing hope and got nabbed by the Mancheswar police late on Saturday night.
The accused was also involved in a robbery case at Akrush Gokul Plaza under Laxmisagar Police limits earlier. He had come to the Pattanayaks’ residence for duty thrice, but his antecedents were not known to his family, police added.
