Titilagarh town erupted in anger and outrage after the gruesome murder of emerging youth leader and state secretary of the Biju Yuba Janata Dal (BYJD) Abhimanyua Sahu while on his customary morning walk early on Sunday morning.
Hundreds of Sahu supporters staged an angry demonstration at the hospital questioning the way the police was going about the preliminary investigation. Titilagarh IIC Chinatmani Pradhan faced the ire of the agitating supporters of Sahu when he sought to restrain one of them.
Sensing the mood of the protestors, the officer ran back to the police station, but the crowd followed him. The protestors relented only after some patient persuasion by SDPO Dilip Purohit.
In view of the tension in the town, SP R Prakash and additional SP Prafulla Patra rushed to the town and were camping there to oversee security measures.
Hundreds of people joined the funeral procession of the man, who was widely tipped to be the BJD candidate in the coming Assembly election. As the procession winded through the streets of the town, hundreds more paid their last respects to the departed youth leader.
A host of BJD leaders, including Industries minister Niranjan Pujari, former minister AU Singhdeo and BYJD president Sanjay Dasburma, joined the funeral procession.
The wrath of the crowd erupted again when AU Singhdeo, along with his two sons Kalikesh Singhdeo and Arkesh Singhdeo, were paying their last respects to Sahu at the cremation ground. Supporters of Sahu rained abuses on the father-son trio and threw away the wreaths they had placed on the body of their leader.
A Titilagarh bandh has been called by supporters of Sahu to press the demand for a CBI inquiry into his brutal killing.
Sahu was attacked with some sharp edged weapon near a dhaba in Bandupala area of the town at about 5.45 am on Sunday while he was on his daily morning walk. He was rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. His neck had been slit with a sharp weapon. Besides, there was a serious injury on the back side of his head.
Police reached the murder spot in Bandupala with a scientific team and sniffer dog and collected some blood samples from the spot.
Born in 1969, Sahu was the general secretary of DAV college in Titilagarh. After obtaining a degree in Law, he worked as a contractor for some time. He rose to prominence when he fielded candidates against the BJD nominees in the last urban election and managed to form the council.
Though close to the Singhdeos in the initial stages, he had fallen out with the royal family of late and had grown close to Finance minister Prasanna Acharya, Energy minister Arun Sahu and BYJD president Sanjay Dasburma. He was eyeing the BJD ticket from Titilagarh constituency, which had made him an eyesore for some local BJD leaders.
