Bhubaneswar, Sep 20:
Former Odisha finance minister and senior BJD leader Prafulla Ghadai has been expelled from the party for his intemperate outburst against the leadership in a newspaper interview.
“Prafulla Gahadi has been expelled from the party for his anti-party activities with immediate effect,” party supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced in a cryptic statement to the media just a short while ago.
Patnaik left immediately after making the announcement and did not take any question.
Earlier, Ghadai’s MLA son Pritiranjan met Patnaik. However, there is some confusion whether the senior Ghadai was also with him during the meeting.
While Pritiranjan claimed that both of them met the party supremo. party spokesperson Samir Dash claimed that only Pritiranjan met Patnai.
Asked about his purported meeting with the party chief a short while before his expulsion was announced, Ghadai refused to say anything.
But he did say that a section in the party had been working against him for quite some time now.
Earlier, party spokespersons Samir Dash and Pratap Keshari Deb had given a clear indication of which way the wind was blowing saying the former finance minister’s statement constituted breach of party discipline and invited disciplinary action.
“He could have said whatever he had to say to the party chief in writing or personally met him to air his views. But he chose to air his grievances in the media which is most unfortunate,” Deb said.
