The cyclonic storm Phailin and subsequent floods have destructed 7234 schools, including 6057 elementary schools and 1177 high schools, in the state. The government has estimated the cost of immediate repair and restoration work of the damaged school buildings at Rs 328.41 crore.
As per the assessment report of School & Mass Education department, Ganjam district, which experienced the maximum devastation, reported damage of 1800 schools while Cuttack registered 929 damaged schools.
Besides, 844 schools in Puri, 535 in Baleswar, 378 in Nayagarh, 372 in Jajpur, 366 in Jagatsinghpur, 324 in Khurda, 259 in Bhadrak, 231 in Angul and 220 in Gajapati have been damaged.
208 schools in Mayurbhanj, 173 in Kandhamal, 171 in Boudh, 128 in Kendrapara, 86 in Keonjhar, 85 in Dhenkanal, 61 in Sundargarh, 56 in Rayagada and 8 schools in Deogarh have experienced devastation and severe damage due to cyclonic storm and floods.
