Kendrapara, June 25:
In a shocking incident that illustrates how women are treated as an object of sex irrespective of their age, a 62-year-old widow was subjected to an attempt to rape by a 33 year-old man in a remote village in Odisha’s Kendrapara district today.
The only redeeming part of it is that she was rescued in the nick of time by fellow villagers.
Reports said, Ranjan Das, a person of dubious reputation, today allegedly outraged the modesty of 62-year-old widow in Itipur village under Nikirai police limits in Kendrapara district.
Local people rescued the elderly victim from the clutches of the ‘maniac’ after she raised an alarm.
The culprit Ranjan Das (33) has been arrested and has reportedly confessed to the crime, police said.
Both the victim and the accused have been medically examined.
Ranjan has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), said Inspector, Nikirai police station, Kiran Kumar Hembram.
The offender, a hardened criminal, has been facing trial in at least three criminal cases.
