61st state athletic meet; 7 new records on first day

Seven new records were set on the opening day of the 61st State Athletic Meet at Barabati stadium here on Saturday.

In the girls -16 category, Carmela Barla of Sundargarh set a new record in the javelin throw event with 33.54 metres while of Salmi Kispota of Sundargarh erased the previous record in shotput with a throw of 10.63 metres in the girls-16 category.

Ace sprinter Dutee Chand of KIIT, Bhubaneswar set a new record in the 100-metre sprint clocking 11.8 seconds in the girls’ under-20 category while another KIIT student Amiya Mallick set a new record in the 100-metre sprint clocking 10.6 seconds in boys’ under-20 category.

In the boys-14 category, Biswajeet Mohanty of Bhubaneswar set a new record in the 100-metre sprint with a timing of 11.7 seconds.

In the girls-16 group, Champawati Behera of Sundargarh set a new record in 1000-metre run covering the distance in 3:12.8 seconds while Jyoshna Sabar of Bhubaneswar in girls’ under-16 group set a new record in 600 metre run clocking 1:45.1 seconds.

Commissioner-cum-secretary, state Sports and Youth Services, Saswat Mishra inaugurated the meet in the presence of Olympian Anuradha Biswal, president of Odisha Athletic Association Jagmohan Patnaik and secretary of Odisha Cricket Association and Odisha Athletic Association Asirbad Behera.

The coach of Indian athletic team Nagpuri Ramesh was felicitated on the occasion while international athletes Dutee Chand and Amiya Mallik received a cash awards of Rs 125,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.
