6 hard core criminals arrested in Odisha capital

Commissionerate Police achieved a major success under its recently launched ‘Operation Black Smoke’ today when it busted a six-member gang of hard core criminals while they were planning to commit a dacoity near Laxmi Narayan Temple in Unit-IV area of the Odisha capital.

The special squad, local police and Quick Action Team (QAT) are involved in the operation to check the flow of illegal fire-arms and to clamp down on criminal and antisocial activities in the city.

Briefing newsmen here today, Twin City Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr R P Sharma said the Special Squad team, along with QAT and Kharvela Nagar police, on receiving information about suspicious movement of some history-sheeters led by Hemant Dash and Jitu alias Jitendra Palei in the city for the last few days, raided a deserted place near Laxminarayan Temple under Kharvela Nagar police limits and arrested six members of the gang. Another member Suka alias Sukadev Behera (25) managed to flee from the spot, he said.

The accused, armed with deadly weapons, had congregated at the place and were preparing to commit dacoity in the nearby residential area, said Dr Sharma quoting from the confessional statement of the accused.

The other accused were identified as P Rajesh Rao alias Linga (21), Pravat Kumar Prasad alias Chhotu (28), Rabi Rao (19), all of them hailing from the city and Alekha Sahoo (26) of Nuagaon in Angul.

Kharvela Nagar police has registered a case number-267 against the accused slapping charges under sections 399, 402 of IPC r/w section 25 Arms Act and investigation is on, said the CP, adding the accused persons will be produced to a local court here today.

The CP further said the police would seek remand for the accused to question them about other cases registered against them at various police stations in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Khordha and Angul.

The police have seized one pistol, three rounds of bullets, 2565 packets of cigarette, 17 mobile phones, one gold locket, one gold ring, two gold chains, 19.400 grams gold, 2 laptops, one motor cycle, one four wheeler, 2 katuris, one sword and one house breaking equipment.

Hemant, who hails from Old Town area in the city, is involved in as many as 65 cases registered as different police stations while 14 cases were pending against Palei, the commissioner said.
