A whopping 5942 cases of juvenile crime are under trial at district juvenile justice boards in Odisha, minister for Women and Child Welfare Usha Devi informed the state Assembly on Wednesday.
While Koraput district has highest number of such incidents with 609 cases under trial, Sambalpur has 524, Sundargarh 495 and Sonepur has least number of cases with only 26.
Replying to a question of MLA Anshuman Mohanty, the minister said keeping in mind issues such as child trafficking, juvenile crime, child sacrifice and deat,h the government has formed seven committees in every district to protect the interest of minors. District child protection unit, block level child protection committee, Panchayat level child protection committee and child welfare committee etc are among them.
Also, the government is engaged in organizing meeting of NGOs and social activists to create awareness for protection of child rights among the public.
