The main accused, Debasish Mohapatra alias Biku (24) of Bhingura village in Puri district, staying at Kapileswar village under Lingaraj police limits, is a hardcore criminal having 14 cases of extortion, robbery, attempt to murder and swindling charges slapped against him under Lingaraj, Airfield, Khandagiri police stations. Debashis’s cousin Biswajit Malia alias Tiku (28) of Kapileswar, who was among the five arrested, has one case against him.
The three other associates of Debasish, Supravat Mohapatra alias Pupun (18) of Hiranyapada, Rajesh Kumar Dalai (20) and Bibhuti Behera (19) of Matiapada, all of them Puri district, are being interrogated to ascertain if they have any cases against them.
The accused, booked under section 399, 402 of IPC and 25 Arms Act and 9 (B) of IE Act, were forwarded to the local court today.
Briefing newsmen here today, Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr R P Sharma said Debashis, the mastermind, along with other four of his associates, had been committing a series of crimes in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Angul districts for the last three years.
As part of its efforts to check illegal trade of arms in city, the QAT team, along with Lingaraj police personnel, nabbed the accused while they were planning to commit crime somewhere along the National highway connecting Bhubaneswar and Puri last night. The police team overpowered the anti-socials and seized one revolver from Debasish, who was about to fire at them during a tussle between police personnel and the anti-socials, the CP said.
Debasish has revealed during interrogation that he had acquired the seized revolver from one anti-social Duryadhan Nayak of Puri staying at Khandagiri here.
“During investigation we have found out that the bullet the accused had used is made from Indian Ordinance Factory. Investigation is on to ascertain the facts. We think the accused might have procured the bullets from some middleman, a licence holder,” Dr Sharma said, adding they used these guns at the time of highway robbery.
The CP informed that the criminal gang used to collect arms from Puri district imported into the state illegally by criminals from Bihar and Jharkhand. “We have intelligence data that some anti-socials were carrying out the gun trading racket in the district. The district police have started a manhunt to nab these persons,” he said.
Moreover, past record reveals that five cases were pending against the accused at Satyabadi, Sea Beach, Banrpal police stations.
While Suprabhat Mohapatra was pursuing his Diploma in Hotel Management in the city, the other accused were in matriculation. All of them used to stay at Debasish uncle’s house at Kapileswar under Lingaraj police limits to commit crime in city.
