Odisha government will plant over 12 crore saplings this year and nearly 35 lakh saplings will be planted on July 7, chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced while addressing a state-level function organised to mark 65th Bana Mahotsav here on Thursday.
While around 6.5 crore saplings would be planted under different Central and state government schemes, 5.5 crore saplings would be distributed among people free of cost for plantation in their own lands, he said.
A target of planting about 45 crore saplings will be reached by 2017 under the Green Odisha Mission, launched in 2013-14 , Forest department sources claimed.
The chief minister felicitated Budharaja Vana Suraksha Samiti of Sambalpur with a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh while Dibakar Jena, a forest guard of Malkangiri who had displayed exemplary courage in protecting forest was also honoured .
Forest and environment minister Bikram Keshari Arukh, MP Dr Prasanna Pattasani, Bhubaneswar MLAs Bijay Kumar Mohanty and Priyadarshi Mishra and mayor Ananta Narayan Jena were present on the occasion.
